When shopping for a motocross helmet, we often tend to choose it for its design, which in fact is not quite the proper way to go about making this decision. Sure, you may get lucky and the chosen helmet will be perfect for you, but in most cases it will not.
The best way to choose a helmet, is to try on for a size, taking into consideration the following factors.
First of all, comfort! We must ensure that the helmet is comfortable, that there is no pressure points or discomfort of any kind at the forehead, top of the head and on the sides. This is very important since helmets are often worn for long periods of time.
Secondly, adjustment (the fit). A motocross helmet, even ATV, should be relatively snug on the head. When shaking your head, the helmet should not move at all, even without it being secured. You should also be able to tip your head upside down without helmet falling off or moving. It is normal to have difficulty chewing gum as the cheeks should be squeezed within the pads. Also remember, that a helmet loosens up a bit as the comfort liner compresses through use. An improperly adjusted helmet can have catastrophic consequences such as, a broken nose or loss of the helmet in a crash.
And third, ventilation and whether the liner is washable. If you want to excel in MX, you must be comfortable, this also means stay cool and to be in clean equipment. A well ventilated helmet with both front and rear vents is preferred. The liner should, in turn, be removable and washable, not only to feel good and remove dirt, but also to restore its original form, which tends to collapse with use.
From brand to brand, comfort and fit vary enormously, which is why we must try on a few options. One should also know, sizing is not always equivalent from one brand to the next. So, it is possible that a medium CKX helmet will fit like a glove, but with Bell you may need a large.
It is only after these steps ,that you should consider the choice in design and aesthetics, afterall you want to choose a helmet that pleases you and that will ''fit'' with our bike!
Happy shopping,
